Matt LeBlancBBC has confirmed that the star of Friends will co-host the revamped version of Top Gear with British TV and radio personality, Chris Evans in May.

48-year-old Matt LeBlanc will be the first ever non-British host in the 39 year history of the popular driving show, and is set to join the production immediately.

“As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I’m honoured and excited to be part of this iconic show’s new chapter,” the American actor said of the role.

Evans also stated, “we can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year.”

The announcement has come as a surprise to many fans despite LeBlanc dropping numerous hints over Twitter over the past several days. LeBlanc has appeared twice before on the show and holds the title for “fastest celebrity lap.”

Jeremy Clarkson was the previous host for the show but BBC later decided not to renew his contract after he attacked a producer last year.

No charges were filed but the incident, and the following scandal caused too large of an uproar to allow Clarkson to return.

Clarkson’s co-hosts, Richard Hammond and James May, have reportedly teamed up with Amazon Prime to helm their own motoring show.
