A Shire Fairy Tale

Cronulla Sharks

Cronulla Sharks

Turn the porch light off, the Cronulla Sharks are coming home with their first ever premiership win in 49 years!

In what was a high quality and entertaining game, the Sharks produced an amazing first half of football, leading 8-0 at half time. This was all thanks to a Ben Barba try under the posts along with a James Maloney penalty goal early in the first half.

The second half saw the Melbourne Storm hit back with two converted tries produced by Jesse Bromwich and Will Chambers. The Will Chambers try came out of nothing and surprised everyone. With the score line 12-8, all the momentum was with the Storm and with just under 15 minutes remaining on the clock, Sharks fans hope began to fade as time slowly started to run out.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, retiring Sharks hooker Michael Ennis gave a short ball to Andrew Fifita who crashed over the line carrying 4 Melbourne players on his back and producing one of the tries of the season. The roar of 60,000 Sharks fans shook the stadium and the Sharks had hit the front (14-12) with under 10 minutes to go. Time slowly came to an end and the Sharks had just won their first ever premiership.

In what was a very gritty and heart stopping match, the Sharks were the better team on the night. Once that final siren sounded, it was as if you could hear the cheers from the fans back home watching the game in the Shire. You could feel the emotion running through all the Cronulla fans and players and how much it meant to every single one of them. One of the big talking points coming out of the game was in the 70th minute where Will Chambers blew a golden chance to seal victory when he opted to give an inside ball to unmarked player Cooper Cronk who would have certainly scored and potentially won the game for the Melbourne Storm. History was created last night and will be a game to remember for years to come.
