Triple J’s 2016 Hottest 100

Triple J's Hottest 100

Triple J's Hottest 100No Australia Day is complete without the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown and this year, there were some great tracks!

The background music to the flag wearing, binge drinking and BBQs, we all listened eagerly to the 100 most popular songs of the year.

After last year’s controversial #Tay4Hottest100 campaign, Triple J have managed to weed out any similar troll campaigns with their new “troll clause.” That included #Bieber4Hottest100 many Beliebers tried to start up.

Despite all the controversy, the Hottest 100 is still considered one of the highest honours in the land with some great highlights and this year, the number 1 spot went to Aussie band The Rubens for their song Hoops. The song debuted in mid-July on Triple J and scored nearly 2.1 million votes.

With those votes, The Rubens overtook a number of high-ranking Aussies such as Chet Faker, Tame Impala and Flume. Interestingly, Hoops was the only song by The Rubens that featured on the countdown.

2016 saw the highest number of voters in the history of the countdown. 26 new artists debuted on the list this year, but it didn’t reach the record of most Aussie entries, which was set at 59 last year.

This marks the third consecutive year that an Aussie has taken out the number 1 spot.
