Denzel Washington’s First Western Film

Magnificent Seven

Magnificent SevenDenzel Washington has been chosen to lead the new adaptation of The Magnificent Seven by director Antoine Fuqua, and boy has he made a great choice!

Washington hadn’t filmed any Western movies before but Fuqua seemed to know exactly what he was doing. The American film producer painted a vivid scene of Washington dramatically riding over a hill on a black steed, even playing the hip-hop version of an Ennio Morricone Western theme to set the right mood. Thankfully for all of us, it worked. Denzel agreed to the movie with a smile saying, “All right, let’s do it.”

The African-American actor has also shown great dedication, from taking horseback riding lessons, to growing out an impressive ‘stache and gluing himself to his character’s nickel-plated Colt .45 Peacemaker.

“He had it with him all the time, even when he wasn’t on set. We’d have meetings and he’d be spinning and twirling his gun while we were talking,” Fuqua said.

“He used to walk around his house spinning guns, go to restaurants. Obviously, people knew it was for his character.”

The remake features a diverse star-studded cast saddling up for the Wild West, including Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Martin Sensmeier, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Byung-hun Lee. The modern adaptation rides into theatres on September 23 and I for one, am extremely hyped. Who doesn’t love a good gang of misfits coming together to save the day?
