 Fawlty Towers TourThe cast for the Australian and New Zealand Fawlty Towers tour has been announced.

John Cleese, who co-wrote and starred as Basil Fawlty in the original BBC TV series, travelled to Sydney earlier this year to assist in the casting process.

He told the crowd at one of his live performances in March, with fellow Monty Python star Eric Idle, he had received a call and the actor he wanted to play Basil Fawlty got the role.

It was officially announced in late March that Stephen Hall would play the lead character in the comedy stage performance.

Blazey Best would take on the part of Sybil Fawlty.

Today, the rest of the cast for Fawlty Towers – Live on Stage have been named and they will debut at Sydney’s Roslyn Packer Theatre for a four week performance from August 19, before touring Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth Brisbane and New Zealand.

Cleese said earlier this year, he intends to return to Australia to see the show go to stage in August.

Fawlty Towers is set in a fictional hotel in the seaside town of Torquay in the UK. It is run by the endlessly rude, tense and put-upon Basil Fawlty and his bossy wife Sybil. Their dealings with a string of demanding and eccentric guests are the source of a wealth of comic and farcical situations.
