Eddie Izzard Raises £1m For Sport Relief After Finishing 27 Marathons

Eddie Izzard

Eddie IzzardComedian Eddie Izzard battles through dehydration, sunstroke and heat exhaustion over 707 miles to run 27 marathons in 27 days, raising more than £1 million for Sport Relief.

Izzard participated in what he says was “the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” as a tribute to the 27 years Nelson Mandela spent in prison before becoming South Africa’s first black president.

As he passed the final finish line in Johannesburg, under a giant statue of Nelson Mandela, the 54-year-old was met with loud cheering and chants of “Eddie, Eddie, Eddie.”

Moments later, he celebrated by guzzling Champagne straight from the bottle. This wasn’t Izzard’s first time attempting the marathon but during his first try in 2012, he was forced to stop due to health issues after the fourth marathon.

“I always knew I’d be back. When I didn’t make it in 2012 I knew I’d be back. I can’t stand upright, I have a huge blister and I’m exhausted. But I’m delighted.”

So are we! What a tremendous achievement.

“This has been a long project but with the help of ‘Team 27’ I did it. Thank you so much to everyone who donated.” Izzard also commented saying, “This was tough so don’t do this at home.”

Don’t worry Eddie, I wouldn’t be able to even in my dreams. But this is truly an inspiring story!
