Generally speaking, in the lead up to the Oscars, it becomes quite obvious who’s going to reap in most of the awards.
This year however, the Oscars have been one of the most confusing roller coaster award season rides in recent memory.
Films that were expected as the favourites, such as Steve Jobs and Carol faded into the backlight and Ridley Scott, who was expected to win his first Oscar for The Martian didn’t even receive a nomination.
Mad Max: Fury Road won most of the technical awards, though that was to be expected, and even received Best Picture and Best Director nominations.
Late releases such as The Revenant and The Big Short on the other hand, surged in popularity and this year marked one of the most iconic moments in the Oscars history.
After years of being snubbed, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Oscar! He received a standing ovation and gave an important speech about the importance of saving the environment.
It was Tom McCarthy’s low-key tale of journalists investigating reports of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, Spotlight that took home the Best Picture though.
Another note-worthy mention this year is the amount of controversy that the Oscars were seeped in with the #Oscarssowhite scandal straining heavily over the entire night. You can read more about this here!
